Civil War Veterans Buried In Washington State - Pioneer Graveyard in Union Gap

Pioneer Graveyard in Union Gap

102 W. Ahtanum Road
Union Gap, Yakima County, Washington

The oldest cemetery in Yakima County.  At the E end of Ahtanum Rd., Union Gap (originally Yakima City).  Part of the cemetery swept away in a flood in 1906. Many bodies removed to Tahoma Cemetery, Yakima, and recorded there.

Priscilla Goodwin was the first buried in the land set aside by her family's property, which later became known as the Pioneer Graveyard. Goodwin was among one of the pioneers who travelled west to establish communities in Washington state.

At the east end of the Ahtanum Road in Union Gap, Washington is the Pioneer Graveyard.  Given to the “community” by Lewis H. Goodwin, M.D., the cemetery is located on a cliff above the west bank of the Yakima River.  Even at this distance above the river, it was still swept by a flood in 1906, which washed away some graves.  The records of Tahoma Cemetery in the neighboring city of Yakima indicate that some, who were initially buried at this cemetery, were moved to Tahoma Cemetery to lie in larger family lots there.
