History

Cypress Lawn Memorial Park, a serene 25-acre site established in 1934 by Mr. and Mrs. Penroy, is a testament to Washington's natural beauty. The site is adorned with antique trees, seasonal foliage, and vibrant flowers, creating a picturesque landscape. A sloping hill offers a breathtaking view of the Cascade Mountains to the north of the park, inviting visitors to connect with the surrounding environment.

In 1914, the City of Everett received the Cypress Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery from the Penroy family. The city managed the cemetery until 1925, when the Cypress Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery Association was established and took over its administration. The association managed the cemetery until 2008 when the land was deeded back to the City of Everett. At some point thereafter, the Dignity Corporation assumed management of Cypress Lawn Memorial Park.

Cypress Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery has a rich history of integrating graves from local cemeteries, a process that is carried out with the utmost respect and care. One significant relocation occurred in 1998 when graves from Everett Catholic Cemetery were moved to Cypress Lawn. After this relocation, a memorial was erected featuring the names of the deceased whose graves were transferred, ensuring their memory lives on.

Cypress Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Everett is not just a place of rest, but a vibrant part of the community. It is the most popular cemetery in the city, ranking 1st among the two cemeteries in Everett. It ranks 10th out of 20 cemeteries in Snohomish County, 30th out of 221 cemeteries in Washington State, and 2,619th in the United States, a testament to its enduring popularity and the strong sense of community it fosters.

According to Find A Grave, twelve individuals who died before 1934, when the Penroy's established the cemetery, are buried in Cypress, including John and Albert Dean, who were the first recorded burials in 1874. Their father, Frank M. Dean (1835-1896), is the oldest person interred at this site. Additionally, there are indications that approximately half of these individuals were initially buried at other locations before being reinterred here.

Among those interred at Cypress Lawn is Pvt. Semer Benjamin Tift was born on 24 April 1842 in Ohio and passed away on 1 March 1945. He was the last Civil War soldier in Washington State and one of the first members of the Grand Army of the Republic, John Buford Post #89 in Everett, WA.
