History
The Darrington Cemetery, a place of historical significance, was established in 1916, with Mrs. Edith Nugent as the property owner. The first burial, a solemn event that occurred on 29 March 1916, marked the interment of Mrs. Nugent’s husband, Sterling Nugent, in this hallowed ground. Mrs. Nugent is also buried in the cemetery, adding to its historical reverence.
In the same year, Edith Nugent Kennedy formally transferred 5.03 acres of land to the Darrington Community, which is now recognized as Darrington Cemetery. The Darrington Community Association managed the cemetery until the Town of Darrington took ownership in 2002. The Town now oversees maintenance and operations, while the Cemetery Board addresses issues related to cemetery development, opportunities, and general policies and regulations defined by the Town Council.
The cemetery, spanning 5.03 landscaped acres, is a serene oasis reflecting the natural beauty of Darrington. It accommodates in-ground and above-ground burials, providing a peaceful resting place for our loved ones. Additionally, Koppenburg Enterprises donated a centrally located columbarium containing 80 niches as a memorial for the victims of the 2014 Hwy 530 Mudslide, adding to the tranquility of the cemetery.
