History
The Skamokawa Fern Hill Cemetery, located in Wahkiakum County, was founded in 1896 and handed over to the City of Skamokawa in 1914. Management of the cemetery remained with the city until 1925, when the Skamokawa Fern Hill Cemetery Association was formed and took over administration. This association managed the cemetery until 2012, when ownership of the land was returned to the City of Skamokawa.
The Skamokawa Fern Hill Cemetery has incorporated several graves from local cemeteries. One significant relocation occurred in 1994 when graves from the Skamokawa Catholic Cemetery were moved. Following this relocation, a memorial was erected that lists the names of the deceased whose graves were transferred.
According to Find A Grave, the earliest recorded death at the cemetery is that of Anna Christina Anderson Carlson, who passed away in 1883. The Skamokawa Fern Hill Cemetery is the most popular among the two cemeteries in Skamokawa, ranking 1st in the city. It ranks 10th out of 17 cemeteries in Wahkiakum County, 43rd out of 229 in Washington State, and 2,763rd in the United States.
