History
The Bothell Pioneer Cemetery in King County was established in 1887 and currently spans 5.3 acres. Its initial land of 0.5 acres was donated by George R. Wilson, one of Bothell’s early settlers who arrived in 1870. Wilson is buried in this cemetery, which is marked by a large stone obelisk. The cemetery is the final resting place for several of Bothell’s founders, early settlers, and workers, including many Civil War veterans.
In 1902, Wilson transferred ownership of the cemetery to the local Odd Fellows Lodge. In 1918, the Lodge handed it over to the City of Bothell. The City managed the cemetery until 1928, when the Bothell Pioneer Cemetery Association was formed and took over administration. This association continued to oversee the cemetery until 201,0 when the land was again deeded back to the City of Bothell.
Over the years, the Bothell Pioneer Cemetery has shown great care and respect for its history, absorbing many graves from local cemeteries. One significant relocation occurred in 1992 when the Bothell Catholic Cemetery graves were moved, and a memorial was established listing the names of those interred, a testament to the reverence shown to those who came before us.
In terms of popularity, the Bothell Pioneer Cemetery ranks first among the two cemeteries in Bothell and is ninth out of 21 cemeteries in King County. It ranks 40th out of 226 cemeteries in Washington State and 2,629th in the United States. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 16 February 1996.
