It is one of the few municipal facilities of its kind in the Puget Sound area. Over the past century, nearly 4,500 people, including some of Kirkland's early pioneers, have been buried here. Improvements completed in 1994 increased the cemetery's capacity by about 3,500.
Kirkland Cemetery in King County was founded in 1885 and handed to the City of Kirkland in 1914.
The City of Kirkland managed the Kirkland Cemetery until 1939, when the Kirkland Cemetery Association took over after its formation. The association continued to administer the cemetery until 2008, when it was deeded back to the City of Kirkland.
Kirkland Cemetery has incorporated several graves from the local cemeteries. One notable relocation was done by Kirkland Catholic Cemetery in 1996. After the relocation, a memorial with a list of the names of the deceased whose graves were moved was erected.
Kirkland Cemetery in Kirkland ranks number 1st out of the two cemeteries in Kirkland City in terms of popularity. Further, it ranks 9th out of 17 cemeteries in King County, 37th out of the 225 in Washington State, and 2833 in the United States.
