History
Enumclaw Evergreen Memorial Park, a sprawling 25-acre expanse, holds a rich tapestry of history within its grounds. It was once two separate entities- the unnamed Enumclaw Cemetery and the Catholic Holy Cross Cemetery, the third in a series of Catholic cemeteries in this predominantly mining community. In 1958, the City of Enumclaw took over the city cemetery from the Evergreen Cemetery Association. The two cemeteries were united after the city annexed Holy Cross in 1971, giving birth to a public cemetery. The old tree line that still marks the original boundaries is a testament to this union, and the combined cemetery is now known as Evergreen Memorial Park.
The earliest burials here date back to 1890, but older gravestones can be found for individuals whose remains were moved from nearby locations. According to Find A Grave, the first recorded death was William G. Smith in 1883. The cemetery remains active and open to the public, supported by an endowment care fund and a beautification fund managed by the city treasurer. The Catholic section is still available for Catholic families under the restrictions of Sacred Heart Parish in Enumclaw.
Evergreen Memorial Park is more than just a resting place. It offers various services and products, including a mausoleum, to cater to the community’s diverse needs. The Cemetery Board oversees the park, which is administered by Weeks’ Funeral Homes. Office hours are Monday through Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Records of the Enumclaw Cemetery were published by the South King County Genealogical Society in 2001 and are available at the Seattle Public Library, providing a wealth of information for those interested in the cemetery’s history.
