History

Fernhill Cemetery, located in Skagit County, was established in 1905 and transferred to the City of Anacortes in 1915. The City managed the cemetery until 1935 when the Fernhill Cemetery Association took over its administration. This association remained in charge until 2006 when the land was returned to the City of Anacortes.

According to Find A Grave, the earliest recorded death at the cemetery is that of Loughlin Kavanaugh, who died in 1865. Fernhill Cemetery has also incorporated graves from several local cemeteries. A notable relocation occurred in 1992 when Anacortes Catholic Cemetery relocated its graves. To honor those whose graves were moved, a memorial was erected, listing their names, a touching tribute to their memory.

Currently, Fernhill Cemetery is the most popular cemetery in Anacortes, ranking first among the two cemeteries in the city. It ranks ninth out of 23 cemeteries in Skagit County, thirty-first out of 235 in Washington State, and 2,659th in the United States.
