History
The old Bellevue Pioneer Cemetery, a place of community and history, was located near 112th Avenue Northeast and Bellevue-Redmond Road. The Warren family initially established their private burial grounds at the Bellevue Pioneer Cemetery in Bellevue, Washington, likely as a place for their family and potentially their pioneer neighbors to be buried. It expanded to include its pioneer neighbors, such as the Whaleys, the Shiachs, the Bechtels, the Boddys, and the Numotos.
A corner of the cemetery was dedicated to the Japanese community.
Though the last plot was sold in 1930, the cemetery remained used through World War II. There were about 200 people buried there. The land was deeded to the Bellevue Masons in 1955, who wanted to build a Masonic Temple on the site. In 1969, the land was sold to developers, and the remains of those buried in the cemetery were removed the following year. Many were reinterred at Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Bellevue or Acacia Cemetery in Lake Forest Park, with unidentified remains marked with “Unknown Bellevue Pioneers” plaques. A total of about 72 people were reinterred.
