History
Forest Lawn Cemetery, considered the longest continuously operating business in West Seattle, has been a part of the community’s history since 1902. In 1920, the cemetery was handed over to the City of Seattle, marking a significant chapter in its story. The city’s management of Seattle Forest Lawn Cemetery lasted until 1939, when the Seattle Forest Lawn Cemetery Association was established and took over its operations. Today, it remains one of West Seattle’s oldest continuously operating businesses. It continues to evolve to meet the needs of the diverse Greater Seattle community, carrying with it a rich and storied past.
Forest Lawn Cemetery, nestled on 20 naturally beautiful acres, is a serene sanctuary featuring attractive trees, seasonal flowers, and well-maintained lawns. It offers a peaceful place to honor the memory of loved ones. Their services are thoughtfully designed to support you during one of life’s most personal and challenging times. You will surely find an arrangement that meets your family’s needs and wishes with various burial options, including glass-front cremation niches in the mausoleum and a granite columbarium.
In the early 1980s, Forest Lawn Funeral Home was established to better serve the West Seattle community. However, the facility closed shortly after opening and was not reopened until 1995. In 2002, it merged with West Home Funeral Chapel, also located in West Seattle. The Seattle Forest Lawn Cemetery Association managed the cemetery until 2007 when the land was returned to the City of Seattle. Currently, the funeral home and the cemetery are part of the Dignity Memorial network, which provides funeral, cremation, and cemetery services. They are dedicated to creating personalized tributes that honor the unique lives of the individuals who contribute to shaping our community each day.
The Seattle Forest Lawn Cemetery has incorporated several graves from local cemeteries. One notable relocation occurred in 1995 when graves were moved from the Seattle Catholic Cemetery. Following this relocation, a memorial was established displaying the names of the deceased whose graves were transferred.
Seattle Forest Lawn Cemetery is the most popular cemetery in Seattle, ranking first among the two cemeteries in the city. It is also ranked 10th out of 18 cemeteries in King County, 44th out of 222 in Washington State, and 2,551st in the United States.
