History

Edmonds Memorial Cemetery, a historical landmark, was established in 1891 on four acres of land donated to the IOOF Lodge 96 by early settler Thomas E. White. It is significant in our community’s history. In the early 1900s, the cemetery was sold into private ownership. Then, in 1982, Lawrence E. Hubbard transferred ownership of the cemetery to the City of Edmonds.

The City Council appoints the Edmonds Cemetery Board, which collaborates with citizen volunteers and residents to manage the cemetery’s operations. A full-time Sexton, employed by the Parks, Recreation, and Human Services Department, is responsible for a range of duties, including sales of plots, public services, burial arrangements, and grounds maintenance. Their role is crucial in ensuring the cemetery is well-maintained and provides visitors a respectful and peaceful environment.

The cemetery, a self-sustaining entity, covers all its expenses through an enterprise fund account, including labor, supplies, operations, and services. Revenue is generated through the sale of cemetery plots and services. The Cemetery Board allocates 10% of the annual revenue to an endowment care fund account, ensuring the cemetery’s future maintenance needs are met.

In the past 10 years, the Cemetery Board has actively sought to improve the infrastructure. The cemetery office has been renovated to provide a more welcoming environment for visitors, the grounds and roadways have been enhanced to ensure safety and accessibility, and an irrigation system and well have been installed to maintain the beauty of the landscape. Additionally, major equipment has been purchased to improve the efficiency of operations. The beautiful new Edmonds Columbarium, featuring 680 niches and an eternal waterfall, was completed in October 2006. Each niche can accommodate two urns. Maps and information about the cemetery and columbarium are always available.

Memorials and donations from private and civic organizations have beautified the six-acre cemetery. The community is actively involved in its activities, with events such as Memorial Day Services, partnership programs with elementary schools, and the Annual Walk Back In Time event providing opportunities for people to tour the cemetery and appreciate its historical significance.
