History

 Company Town:

Black Diamond was built as a company town for the Black Diamond Coal Company, which provided housing, infrastructure, and other necessities for its workers.

Need for a Cemetery:

As the town grew and the coal mining industry thrived, the need for a designated burial ground for the miners and their families became apparent.

Company and Community Cemetery:

In collaboration with the local community, the Black Diamond Coal Mining Company established the cemetery as a company burial ground for its employees and a community cemetery for its residents.

Historical Significance:

The cemetery is a testament to the town’s rich history and cultural diversity. Many of those buried are immigrants who came to the area seeking work in the mines.

Cultural Landscape:

The cemetery is considered a complex cultural landscape, capturing the ethnic diversity of the town’s early history. Grave markers represent various languages, religious affiliations, and fraternal organizations.

National Register of Historic Places:

In April 2000, the Black Diamond Cemetery was proudly placed on the National Register of Historic Places, a testament to its enduring historical significance.
