History
In the spring of 1888, citizens of Blaine and vicinity met and formed the Blaine Cemetery Association. The Blaine Cemetery was founded in 1893. On 11 June 1894, a deed was recorded (to take the place of a deed not dated but recorded on 17 April 1889) in the records of Whatcom County, Washington Territory, in which William L. and Lucy R. Rogers transferred 5 acres, more or less, “to be held in trust for” the Blaine Cemetery Association. On 31 December 1896, the Blaine Cemetery Association transferred the cemetery to the IOOF Lodge. Carl G. Carlson donated land to the cemetery on 24 February 1908 and again in 1914. In 1914, the cemetery was handed over to the City of Blaine. In May 1934, the cemetery was transferred back to the Association, with the IOOF retaining certain rights and privileges for burials in the northeast corner. On 17 December 1934, the Blaine Cemetery Association transferred all property, records, and other cemetery holdings to the City of Blaine. The Blaine Cemetery’s management was under the City of Blaine until 1937, when the Blaine Cemetery Association took over after its formation, and until 2007 when the cemetery land was deeded back to the City of Blaine. The city owns and operates approximately 10 acres in size.
The first recorded death was Hattie Kingsley, who was 1 year old, in 1871.
The Blaine Cemetery has incorporated several graves from the local cemeteries. One notable relocation was done by Blaine Catholic Cemetery in 1995. After the relocation, a memorial with a list of the names of the deceased whose graves were moved was erected.
The Blaine Cemetery is the most popular of the two cemeteries in Blaine City. It is also ranked 9th out of 22 cemeteries in Whatcom County, 32nd out of 226 in Washington State, and 2627th in the United States.
The City Clerk’s Office oversees cemetery records, lot and burial sales. Public Works staff provides cemetery repairs and maintenance not covered by the contract.
