Directions

Buchanan Cemetery is located about 1/2 mile north and 1/4 mile west of the fire hall at Agate Bay (Sec 24, R3E T38N). There is no public access to what remains of this cemetery.

History

The cemetery was established in 1890 by Joseph F. Buchanan, a homesteader, following the death of his son, Henry. Initially covering 40 acres, it was first used as a private burial site for the Buchanan family. However, it soon became available to any settler and was left entirely unregulated by state or county authorities. The Whatcom County Bureau of Vital Statistics has no records of this cemetery or the individuals buried there. Over the years, approximately 25 people (some estimates suggest as many as 50) were interred here, including five or six members of the Buchanan family. By 1917, no further burials were allowed.

By 1974, the cemetery had been reduced to about 100 feet by 100 feet. At that time, a few grave depressions could still be seen, but no wooden markers remained. This cemetery was sometimes referred to as “Woodlawn Cemetery” because the Agate Bay region was initially named Woodlawn.
