Joseph Topping lived off and on at the Washington State Soldiers' Home in Orting, Washington, from Nov 1905 until he was honorably discharged on 22 Jul 1910. Included in his file is a postcard dated 2 July 1910 sent from Fish Lake to G.W. Tibbits Orting, Wash., "Please send me my discharge from the Washington State Soldiers home at Orting… Snow most all Gone have not been up to the mine yet but I see no snow. Yours truly Joe"
From The Yakima Herald (Yakima, WA), Weds, 28 Dec 1910, p. 7:
Venerable Mining Man is Found Dead
James Topping of the Cle Elum District Passes Away in His Cabin
James Topping, who has been mining and prospecting in the Cle Elum district for the past 18 years, says the Cascade Miner, was found dead in his cabin near Fish Lake last Saturday.
The sheriff had been notified that Mr. Topping was acting strange and should be looked after, and two men were sent in to look after him. They arrived at his cabin just after he had breathed his last as he was still warm. It is supposed that death resulted from a general breakdown.
His remains were brought to this city Wednesday and placed in the morgue.
Mr. Topping was an old soldier and had spent the winter in the Soldiers' Home, at Orting, for years, but this fall no amount of persuasion would induce him to leave the hills, declaring he intended to spend the winter there. He was very peculiar and was slightly unbalanced mentally at times.
Word of his death was brought to this city by Eugene Smith, he having walked in from Galena, leaving there at 10 a.m. and reaching here at 6:30 p.m.
Mr. Topping had considerable property in the Cle Elum mining district.
Many North Yakima people who have been into the hills were acquainted with Mr. Topping and Messrs. Bryant, Ridgway, Lynch, Taylor and others had spent many hours with him.
Note: The article erroneously names him as James Topping, but it is referring to Joseph Topping, the same man who sent the post card from Fish Lake to the Soldier's Home in Orting in Jul 1910.
