Family History
PERSONAL/FAMILY HISTORY:
Gad Mather Adams was born 4/2/1840 in New York. His father was A. Adam and his mother was Hulda (no nee) Mather.
During the American Civil War (ACW) Mr. Adams served on Mississippi rams Switzerland and Queen of The West. Both were towboats converted for use on the Mississippi (River).
In the 1870 census of Pana in Christian County, IL, Gad M. Adams, 30, was listed as living with his wife Josephine 28, and their children Mary, 6 and Eugene, 3. His occupation was given as a farmer.
In the 1880 census, Gad was again listed in the same place (Pana) with his wife Josephine and children Mary 15; Eugene 12; Cora 10 and Lottie M. 4. Gad and Josephine were both listed as having been born in New York, and the children all in Illinois.
When the 1900 census was taken, Gad was enumerated in Grand Island in Erie County, NY. His occupation was given as servant. His family was found listed in Fairhaven Whatcom County, WA – Josephine was 58; Eugene was 30 and Charolet M. was 24.
On 3/7/1905 G. Mather Adams applied, in Washington State, for a U.S. Government disability pension based on his days of ACW soldiering. The request was granted.
G. Mather Adams died 2/3/1906 in St. Luke’s Hospital Bellingham, WA. He was/is buried in that city’s Bayview Cemetery.
In the 1920 census, Josephine, 78 was listed in Kelso Cowlitz County, WA, with daughter Mary Wilson, 54, and son Eugene Wilson, 24.
Josephine Adams died 12/15/1928. She was/is also buried in Bayview Cemetery.
