Henry Fry (possibly Martin Henry Fry) was born Feb.12,1839 in Oswego Co., N.Y. the son of Henry Laurens Fry and Ellen Wells Fry.
At an early age he moved to Allamakee Co., Iowa where his older brother, John Nelson Fry, and his family resided.
He enlisted as a 22 yr. old in Co. K, 5th Iowa Infantry on July 15,1861 as an additional enlistment after the company had been sworn into U.S. service at Camp Warren, Burlington, Iowa. According to Elias Bush Bascom, also of Co. K, Henry was sent with Homer Ellis with dispatches from Glasgow, Mo. to Boonville, Mo. during the night of Sept.27,1861.
On July 25,1862 Henry received from the Q.M. Dept. at Camp Clear Creek, Miss. - 1 unlined blouse, 1 pair of infantry pants, 2 pairs of cotton flannel drawers, 1 shirt, 1 pair of pegged shoes, and 3 pairs of woolen socks.
At the Battle of Iuka, Miss. Sept.19,1862, Henry was slightly wounded in the hand. He is listed as absent with leave on the Steamer "Masonic General" on a Co. return dated Nov.30,1863. On another Co. return dated May 30,1864 he is listed as absent on special service in 3rd Division Commissary, 15th A.C.
Henry was mustered out at the expiration of his term of service at Chattanooga, Tn. on July 30,1864.
In 1869 he married Miss Nancy M. Landon and they had two children.
Henry filed for an invalid pension on Sept.21,1872 and received pension certificate # 126.843.
By 1900 he is found as a 61 yr. old retire marine engineer living with his wife at Seattle, King Co., Washington.
Henry Fry died on May 29,1914 in Seattle, Washington and his remains were buried in San Juan Co., Washington at Mt. Baker Cemetery. His older brothers John Nelson and Michael were both buried in the same cemetery.
Henry's widow, Nancy M., filed for a widow's pension on June 6,1914 and was awarded certificate # 778.339.
