When John Noble Wallingford was born on July 4, 1833, in Athens, Maine, his father, Jonathan, was 70 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 36. He married Arabella J. DeGroot and they had two children together. He then married Mary Jane Sheridan on June 10, 1907, in Minnehaha, South Dakota. He died on March 8, 1913, in Seattle, Washington, having lived a long life of 79 years.
The pictured cenotaph was placed and dedicated on July 14, 2021, by the Washington Society of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. The ceremony took place during the 131st National Congress, which was being held at Renton, Washington.
John served as Captain of Company I, 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. After 14 years in California he moved to Seattle in 1888, where he was a real estate developer, Seattle City Councilman, and Seattle Police Commissioner. The Seattle District of Wallingford was named for him.
John was admitted to the Washington State Society of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, Seattle Chapter, as a "Real Son" on June 20, 1896, through his father Jonathan Wallingford.
Jonathan Wallingford served from 1780 until the end of the war in Captain Timothy Emerson's Company, Colonel Thomas Bartlett's New Hampshire Regiment of Volunteers.

The Cenotaph is located in the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery, next to Lakeview Cemetery on Capital Hill, Seattle, Washington.
