Samuel Larkins was born into slavery in Kentucky.
William Larkins purchased him and his mother. Later Samuel was given to William's sister in law, Lucretia Hollowell. When Lucretia died in 1851, "Sam" was sold to her brother Hollowel. According to Samuel, his mother was sold away and he was not able to find her. Samuel stated in his pension that he ran from Hollowell to Robert Hopkins farm to get this brother, James. They escaped to Nashville, TN, where they both enlisted into Co. K, 101st U.S. Colored Infantry on January 30, 1865. They mustered out on January 30, 1866.
Samuel made his way back to Kentucky and married Catherine Hawkins. They had 3 children, Landrew, William and Mary. Catherine died in 1883. Samuel traveled to Washington State via Arkansas. He arrived here about 1889.
He worked at the New England Hotel in Orting for a number of years as a barber. Health issues caused Samuel to apply for residence at Orting Soldiers Home on June 2, 1902. At some point, he was evicted from the Home but reapplied with a letter of apology for his unruly behavior. He was readmitted in 1907.
Samuel Larkins' name appears on the African-American Civil War Memorial in Washington, D.C. (Panel C-100). CO K 101ST US C I
