E. P. THURSTON IS LAID TO REST
Was a resident of Moscow 45 years
Survived by Wife and Six Children
The funeral of the late E. P. Thurston, who died Saturday at his home in this city, was held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Short Undertaking Parlors and was conducted by Dr. H. O. Perry, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church.
Mr. Thurston was one of the early day residents of Moscow. The funeral was attended by a large concourse of friends, many of them, like the deceased, pioneers of Moscow and Latah County.
E. P. Thurston was born in St. Joseph County, Michigan, on April 29, 1841, and passed away in Moscow, on August 25, 1923.
He lived all of his earlier life in Michigan, where he was married in 1866 to Sarah Currier. They came west to Oregon in 1876, remaining there for two years and then coming to the Clinton Community, near Moscow, where he homesteaded.
He lived on the homestead for many years and moved from there to Moscow, where his declining years were spent.
Mr. Thurston served in the Civil War during its duration and was in nearly all the important battles of that struggle.
He was in both Libby and Andersonville prisons, remaining in the latter prison eleven months. he was a member of the Fourth Michigan Infantry.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Thurston, three sons, R. B. Hugh Thurston and Elmer Thurston of Moscow; three daughters, Mrs. George Carter, Moscow; Mrs. William Van Pelt, Clarkston, and Mrs. Arthur Lyle, Los Angeles.
Four children preceded him in death.
Mr. Thurston was for many years a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and a long as his eyesight would permit acted as chaplain for the local post.
He was confined to his bed for 19 weeks prior to his death but bore his illness with commendable fortitude. His elf-announced rule of life was the golden rule--"As you would that others should do unto you, do ye even so unto them."
The pallbearers, who bore the body to its last resting place, were all old-time neighbors of Mr. Thurston during the years when he lived on his homestead. They were: John Brown, W.M. Benedict, Fred Weber, Albert Weber, Edward Wiley, and Ivan Burnell.
