James Chalmers died at his home in this city, Thursday morning at 5:20 o'clock aged nearly 75 years. The funeral services were held at Mr. Chalmers home on Silvia street, this afternoon, conducted by Rev. R. J. Campbell of the Presbyterian church, and interment was in the Montesano cemetery.
James Chalmers was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Nov. 23, 1823, the fourth in a family of seven children, all of whom have now passed away, except Mr. John Chalmers of Montesano.
At the age of 16 he was apprenticed to the printing trade and served four years, when the family came to this country in 1843, and settled in Racine, Wis. Mr. Chalmers worked at his trade there for four years, when his health failing, he tried farming. In 1855 he moved to Friendship, Adams county, Wis., where he went into the mercantile business, which he carried on until he came to Montesano in 1892. Mr. Chalmers was married to Miss Elizabeth Kelley. She died in 1890 leaving no children.
He served in the Thirty-eighth Wisconsin regiment for nearly two years, during the late war, and was in the ranks at the end of the war.
In 1892 he closed out his business in Wisconsin and came to Montesano. In the winter of 1896 he was married to Miss Alice A. Morgan, of this city, who survives him.
The late Mrs.A. J. Smith and Mrs. Jas. Foxwell, of Satsop, were sisters of Mr. Chalmers.
Mr. Chalmers was of a quiet, retiring disposition and but little known here except to a few friends. In Wisconsin he had belonged to the Masonic fraternity but did not affiliate with the order after coming to Monteasno.
