PERSONAL/FAMILY HISTORY:
Lewis C. Boston was born 5/10/1835. His place of birth was Augusta, ME.
There is no available documentation pertaining to Lewis’ parentage. The same holds true for possible siblings.
In 6/1863 Lewis’ name appeared on a list of those in the Third Congressional District of Maine subject to do military duty. He subsequently served as a locomotive engineer under Union Gen. U.S. Grant.
After the American Civil War (ACW) Lewis moved westward. By 1880 he was in Yankton Union Township in the Dakota (South Dakota) Territory (DT). There, he homesteaded, receiving a patent (deed) to land in 1881.
By 5/1882, Lewis and family – Elizabeth J. “Lizza” (no nee) Boston, born ca, 1837, ME and children: Edwin (b. ca. 1870 DT) and Ella (b. ca. 1875 DT) – had moved to the Pacific Northwest. First settling Seattle King County, WA, in 1883 the Bostons moved northward to the Mountain View precinct of Whatcom County. There, he proceeded to hew a home and farm out of the wilderness until illness forced him to lay aside his axe.
Lewis died 6/12/1895. Cause of his death was reportedly enlargement of the liver combined with dysentery (sic) and injuries suffered while in the service during the civil war. Burial was/is in Whatcom County’s Mountain View Cemetery located in the community of Ferndale.
Newspaper Notice (in part):
Lewis C. Boston, after about ten months hard fought battle with the conqueror death, passed gently away on Wednesday 6/12/1895. He leaves to mourn him a wife, a son, a daughter, one brother and four sisters. He was well respected and esteemed by those who knew him.
Funeral services were held at the home of the deceased under directions of the Masons, of which order the deceased was a member. Services at the grave were conducted by Brother Masons, and were quite Impressive.
Elizabeth J. Boston’s Death:
Lizz Boston died in Mountain View, Whatcom County, WA during 12/1924. She was/is buried in the Mountain View Cemetery with Lewis.
