An Artificer is a skilled mechanic in the armed forces.

Fredrick Ziegler enlisted as a private in Company E, 15th New York Engineers, on 4 January 1864 at Saugerties, NY, and was discharged as an Artificer (skilled engineer) on 13 June 1865. During his service the 15th participated in the Overland Campaign and the Siege of Petersburg. He apparently had a pronounced German accent, because most of his military records spell his last name as "Seigler."
