Memorial ID
Civil War soldier: Private, Company E, 4th Wisconsin Infantry, enlisted at Jefferson; discharged 9 May 1862 at Baltimore for disability. Personal information on this soldier varies. His Retsil admission papers in 1911 spell his name incorrectly, and say he was born on 6 July 1840 at Willims Port, Vermont; no such town exists. His death certificate says he was born 21 Oct 1843 in Vermont. In any event, he became a carpenter and trimmer, and lived in Minnesota, Nebraska, California, and Washington after the war. He was admitted to the Washington State Veterans Home at Retsil, with his wife. After nine years he was transferred. He resided for five years at Northern State Hospital in Sedro-Woolley. His burial location has not been identified, but his body was returned to Seattle in December 1924.
