Memorial ID
Civil War veteran: Sergeant, Company D, 16th Wisconsin Infantry, service from 3 Sep 1864 to 2 Jun 1865. Some sources indicate he was born in Scotland, but census records say New Brunswick. He was the son of John Stewart and Mary Ann Grover. Following the war, he continued to reside in Wisconsin (Eau Claire and Dunn counties), but lived in Minnesota in 1900. He advanced in his skill and knowledge of the woods and became a timber cruiser. Following the lumber frontier, he came to Washington sometime after 1904 and then retired in 1907. His first residence was near Quartermaster Harbor on Vashon Island. He was in Seattle in 1920 and in Lisabuela in 1930. He was one of the last surviving veterans in King County, Washington. He was married twice. His name was also spelled "Stuard" in some records. His grave site has not been located, but his body was returned to Seattle on 26 Nov 1937.
