Born into slavery as Martin Van Buren, he changed his name and adopted the surname Wright. Martin was a Civil War soldier, Private, Company G, 25th USCI Volunteers, from 29 Jan 1864 to 6 Dec 1865. He married and divorced, and by 1912 was residing in Bellingham, Whatcom County, Washington. He was admitted to the Washington State Soldiers Home at Orting and lived there for at least 8 or as many as 12 years. He received a pension for his service and made occasional trips back to Philadelphia to visit family. The location of his death and burial has not been identified; post a message for the contributor if you have additional information.
