Chris Doern Chilton Times (Wisconsin) Dec 24, 1921
Mrs. Nick Broker of this city (Chilton) received a letter on Wednesday, bringing to her the sad news of the death of her uncle, Chris. H. Doern which occurred at his home in Yakima, Wash., on Dec. 6th, aged 80 years after an illness of ten days. He was born in Nausaw, Germany, May 21, 1841 and came to this country at the age of seven years. He was married at the age of twenty-one to Miss Helen Boyer and two weeks later, on August 14, 1862, enlisted in Company E, 21st Wisconsin, in which he served until the close of the war, the late Harrison C. Hobart of Chilton being his commanding officer. He was taken prisoner at Chickamauga and confined in a southern prison for 15 months. He was honorably discharged on June 5, 1865, and returned to Brothertown, the place of his enlistment where he lived for many years. Some forty years ago he moved with his family to Unity, Clark County, this state, where in 1884 his wife died. In 1887 he was married to Miss Viola Burnside and moved to Marshfield where for several years he was proprietor of the Park Hotel. From there he moved to Indiana and later to Texas, going west from that state to Yakima, Wash. At the time of his death he was Junior Vice commander of the Meade Post, GAR. He was a prominent man of affairs wherever he lived, broad minded and patriotic and always held the good will of his neighbors and those with whom he associated. He is survived by his wife and three children, Mrs. Ida D. Sexton, of Los Angeles, Karl E and Robert B. of Yakima. He also leaves many relatives and friends in Calumet and Fond du Lac Counties.
