Major Clarence M. Barton, a veteran of the civil war and a well-known newspaper man, died at the residence of his son-in-law, Herbert L. Gill, at Oswego, early yesterday morning. The cause of his death was progressive muscular atrophy, with which he had been afflicted for many years.
Major Barton was a conspicuous figure in the newspaper field in Washington. In 1886 he resigned the position of assistant city editor of the Philadelphia Times to take charge of the local desk of the Tacoma Ledger. He occupied this position for several years. Later he assumed the editorial chair of the Olympia Tribune, and was connected with that paper for two years. While in Washington, D.C., he was connected with the Post and Republican. He was secretary of the constitutional convention of Washington, and was for two terms secretary of the state senate. He was very prominent in fraternal circles, being one of the founders of the Knights of Pythias and a member of George Thomas post, G. A. R., of Olympia.
Major Barton's health had been failing for the past two years. Seven months ago he went to the home of his son-in-law, Herbert L. Gill, at Oswego, and remained there until his death. He was conscious to the last moment, and only a short time before his death dictated an editorial to Mr. Gill for his paper, The Iron Worker.
Major Barton leaves a wife and six children, among them being Clarence A. Barton, of Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Herbert T. Gill, of Oswego; Mrs. Lemuel Root and Mrs. Alfred Palmer, of Tacoma. Mr. Gill Arrived from Oswego yesterday with the body, and will take it to Tacoma this morning, where the interment will take place.
