Son of Charles Beary and Sophia Locks, both b. N.Y.
Born in New York. Enlisted at Elmira, Chemung County, New York in the 19th New York Infantry to serve two years. Mustered in as a Private in Company I on 22 May 1861. Designation of the regiment changed to 3rd New York Light Artillery on 11 Dec 1861. Mustered out with the battery on 22 May 1863. Enlisted 5 Mar 1864 in the 34th Independent New York Light Artillery at New York for three years. Mustered in as a Private the same day. Promoted to Corporal prior to 31 Oct 1864; reduced to Private (date not stated); promoted to Corporal 1 Jan 1865; Sergeant 25 Feb 1865. Mustered out with the battery 21 Jun 1865 at Harts Island, New York Harbor. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Served as Post Adjutant from 1910 to 1915. Died in Tacoma, Washington.
