Memorial ID

Matthew Bliss was a machinist. He enlisted in Company D, Massachusetts 7th Infantry Regiment on 15 Jun 1861. He was promoted to full corporal and mustered out on 5 Jan 1864 at Washington, D.C. According to his Civil War records, he was wounded in the war.

 

He must have remarried after Clara's death, because on the 1920 census, his wife's name is Elizabeth and she was born in Iowa.

He has a son, Fred E., 36, born about 1884 in Illinois, living with he and Elizabeth.

Born in Massachusetts. Enlisted in the 7th Massachusetts Infantry for three years at Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. Mustered in as a Private in Company D the same day he enlisted. Promoted to Corporal 1 Jan 1863. Wounded in the leg on 3 May 1863 during the Battle of Salem Church, Virginia, part of the Battle of Chancellorsville. Immediately after the battle, Salem Church became a field hospital. Afterwards he was transferred to the Eastern Troop Convalescent Camp. The Jul-Aug 1863 muster roll indicates that he had been appointed a Ward Master in the Camp. He continued in that role until he was discharged for disability. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Died in Tacoma, Washington. His military and pension records spell his first name "Matthew".

 

Migrating

The Otis Bliss family moved from Massachutes to Ohio, to Illinois and back to Mass. When a bonus from the Civil War Dept. was paid to Matthew, he moved his family to Washington State and settled in Vaughn, Pierce Co. on the Key Peninsula. Clara's Aunt Jenny Farley was already there.

Film #M544, Roll 3 Machinist, 20, enlisted and mustered 15 June 1861, wounded 3 May, 1863, Fredericksburg, Virginia, discharged 5 January 1864 for disability, at Washington, D.C. as a Corporal.

"Matthew E. BLISS, machinist and shoemaker, of Hopkinton, Massachusetts and later of Tacoma, Washington, was born June 8, 1841 at Taunton, Massachusetts (the son of Otis H. Bliss and Roxanna Wilbur of Taunton). He ran away from home at the age of fourteen and later joined the Massachusetts

Volunteers, serving as a Corporal duringthe Civil War. He was married July 3, 1863 at Taunton to Clara Amelia Phelps (dau. of Edmond Wier Phelps and Hopestill Corbet Pond). She was born June 27, 1844 at Hopkinton. They removed from Massachusetts to Ohio, thence to Illinois and returned to Massachusetts. When Mr. Bliss received his Civil War bonus, the family removed to Vaughn, Washington. He was employed at the Washington State Penitentiary, where he taught prisoners to make shoes. Mr. Bliss also ran for a seat in the Washington State Legislature. Mrs. Bliss died August 13, 1890 at Vaughn...After his first marriage, Matthew E. Bliss was married three more times. He was married each time after the death of the previous wife. In 1900 his wife was a Lucinda A., who was born in May of 1853 in Iowa. His fourth wife was Elizabeth Landers. Mr. Bliss died March 30, 1920 in Tacoma.
