Born in Iowa. A resident of Muscatine County, Iowa when he enlisted in the 11th Iowa Infantry for three years. Mustered in as a Private in Company H on 18 Oct 1861. Promoted to 6th Corporal. Re-enlisted and re-mustered as a Veteran Volunteer on 1 Jan 1864. Promoted to Commissary Sergeant on 18 Dec 1864 and transferred to Field & Staff. Mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Served the Post as Junior Vice Commander in 1887. Represented the 35th District (Pierce County) in the Washington State House of Representatives from 1891 to 1892. Died in Tacoma, Washington.

J.D. Caughran Dead

For Ten Years One of the Most Prominent Citizens of Tacoma

Tacoma, May 27.--- Josephus D. Caughran died suddenly early yesterday of heart failure. It was not more than twenty minutes after he first complained o fthe pain in his side that he had breathed his last.

He was a member of the legislature from the Thirty-fifth district in 1891-2 and prior to that time and since had taken an active part in the politics of this district. Mr. Caughran is supposed to leave a large fortune to his heirs, consisting largely of securities, city realty and timber tracts. He leaves a widow and four children. He was an active Ankeny supporter in the last senatorial contest.
