Leanna is the daughter of Seth Newton Stafford and Sarah Anne Warman. Her mother was born in Cheat Neck, Mon, West Virginia in 1829. Sarah is not documented after the 1850 census. Leonna's father remarried by 1855 to Mary Elizabeth "Eliza" Hazlet.
Leanna is enumerated as Mary Staffor in the 1856 Iowa State census with her father, stepmother or 1/2 siblings, so that it appears her middle initial of "M" stands for Mary.
