His parents were James and Almira (Clevland) Northup. His wife was Florell (Curtis) Northup. They settled in Seattle first and Benson published and printed the first Seattle City Directory. By 1878 he started a daily paper which was called The Post. It eventually bacame the Post-Intelligencer.
