Also known as Adams Cemetery.
Directions
The American Legion Cemetery is in rural Adams County, about three miles north of Othello. It was established in 1906 on one acre of land in the southeast corner of Sec. 14, Township 16, Range 20 (Sutton Road and Highway 17). The cemetery is well-kept at this time (Feb 2006) but does have problems with erosion (sandy soil) and gophers. American Legion (aka Adams) Cemetery is located northeast of Othello at the intersection of Sutton Road and Highway 17.
History
The one-acre cemetery’s rich history is a testament to our local heritage and the lives that have shaped our community. It is the final resting place for many early families. There are two stories regarding the establishment of the cemetery. The more commonly heard version is that when Frances Adams died in December 1906, her husband, Francis Adams, set aside a corner of his property to serve as a cemetery. Due to an exceptionally harsh winter, they were unable to transport her body to the cemetery in Cunningham, where most individuals were interred at that time. Frances was buried in what became known as the New Adams Cemetery alongside other early families from the area.
The second account comes from their granddaughter, who offers a different perspective. She states that the couple deeded the land to the city of Othello in 1905 because there was no existing city cemetery. The land remained vacant until Frances died, when she became the first to be buried there. Regardless of which account is accurate, the cemetery has a rich history.
Other early families buried there include the Adams couple, the Bartons, Gochnauers, Mays, Morgans, Sanderses, Showalters, and many more. Interestingly, the Adams children married some Showalter boys, creating a unique bond between these two families. When Francis could no longer maintain the grounds, he entrusted the cemetery care to the Showalters, who were members of the American Legion. They, in turn, passed the responsibility to that organization for ongoing maintenance.
