Also known as Odd Fellows Cemetery, Monroe Memorial Park.
What is now known as the Monroe IOOF Cemetery was originally two adjacent cemeteries,
Monroe Memorial Park and Monroe International Order of Oddfellows (I.O.O.F.) Cemetery,
encompassing 13 acres on a hill northeast of town. A large part was owned and logged by William
Stockton and the hill was sometimes referred to as Stockton Hill. In early 1899 the Monroe
Monitor newspaper noted the establishment of Monroe Memorial Park Cemetery, John F. Stretch
proprietor, while also noting that earlier burials had taken place on this site. An early map of this
cemetery lists it as Stockton Hill Cemetery, Pearsall & Stretch proprietors. Lots were cleared from
the county road on the south (also known as Cemetery Road, now Calhoun Road) and a fence
was erected with gates to the west as well as the south. The cemetery was for many years also
known as Stretch’s Cemetery.
