Newell Baker enlisted as a Private in Company A of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on June 20, 1861, at Adrian, Michigan, for 3 years, at age 19. He was discharged for disability on October 21, 1861., and later enlisted as a Private in Company K of the Fifteenth Michigan Infantry on February 19, 1862. Records indicate that Newell re-enlisted in the same regiment on February 20, 1864, at Scottsboro, Alabama, and was wounded in the arm and chest shortly afterwards on May 24, 1864, at Dallas, Georgia. On August 13, 1865, he was mustered out of service at Little Rock, Arkansas.
