Isaac's parents were Hans Christian Chilberg (originally Kilberg) (b. 31 May 1816 in Knärred, Halland, Sweden d. 13 Jun 1878 in Burlington, Des Moines, Iowa and Johanna Bengstdotter (b. 13 Dec 1817 in Breared, Halland, Sweden and d. 30 Jun 1901 in Everett, Snohomish County, WA).

Born in Sweden. A resident of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois when he enlisted in the 17th Illinois Cavalry for three years. Mustered in as a Private in Company L at St. Charles, Illinois on 24 Feb 1864. Mustered out as a Corporal at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. A member of Phil H. Sheridan Post No. 44 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Later became a member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Died in Orting, Pierce County, Washington. He is buried in a G.A.R. section of the cemetery. Some records spell his last name as "Chilburg" or "Chelburg".
