This Cemetery is also known by Oakwood Cemetery and Prairie Cemetery. It used to be part of Old Tacoma Cemetery, but when the city went out of the cemetery business, two funeral home brothers stepped up and purchased what is now Oakwood Hill Cemetery from the city. Old Tacoma and Oakwood Hill are separated by a cement wall topped with a wire fence. 

Oakwood Hill Cemetery in Pierce County was founded in 1892. In 1916 the cemetery was handed to the City of Tacoma.

The Oakwood Hill Cemetery’s management was under the City of Tacoma until 1932 when Oakwood Hill Cemetery Association took over after its formation. The association took over the administration until 2012 when the cemetery land was deeded again back to the City of Tacoma.

The Oakwood Hill Cemetery has incorporated several graves from the local cemeteries. One of the notable relocations of graves is one done by Tacoma Catholic Cemetery in 1992. After relocation, they erected a memorial with a list of names of the deceased whose graves were moved.

Oakwood Hill Cemetery in Tacoma ranks number 1st out of the two cemeteries in Tacoma City in terms of popularity. Further, it ranks 10th out of 24 cemeteries in Pierce County, 28th out of the 237 cemeteries in Washington State, and 2572 in the United States.
