Joseph Willimas was originally buried in the Bellevue Pioneer Cemetery where you can find more information about him. This memorial page is a duplicate to indicate he was transferred and to show his tombstone at Sunset Hills.∼Joseph was a pioneer resident of Newport and died at the home of his son in Seattle. During the Civil War he served in Co I of the 4th Minnesota Infantry, enlisting in December of 1861 as a Corporal when he was 23 years old. He re-enlisted in January of 1864 and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in October of 1864.
As a widower he married Eva (Corliss) Carr, the widow of John Carr, in Iowa and came here in 1903. Russell Whaley said that Joe got a pension of $20 every three months.
Joseph had lived in Newport until about 18 months before his death. Besides his wife and one son, he was survived by four step-children.
Some kids were found lugging his tombstone down toward the road in the cemetery in about 1968. They were caught, taken to the police station and then made to put the tombstone back where it belonged.
He was removed to the Garden of Rest in Sunset Hills Memorial Park.
