Born in Montpelier, Washington County, Vermont. A resident of Hartford, Windsor County, Vermont when he attempted to enlist in the 3rd Vermont Infantry at Hartford, Vermont on 10 May 1861, but was sent home as he was only 17 years old. On 1 Jun 1861, claiming he was 20 years old, he enlisted in the 3rd Vermont Infantry for three years at Hartford, Vermont. Mustered in as a Private in Company F at St. Johnsbury, Caledonia County, Vermont on 16 Jul 1861. Captured at the month of the Chickahominy River on 19 Aug 1862, and sent to Richmond, Virginia as a prisoner of war. Paroled at Aiken's Landing, Virginia on 13 Sep 1862. Sent to Washington, DC on 28 Sep 1862. Discharged for disability. A resident of West Stockbridge, Berkshire County, Massachusetts when he enlisted in the 4th Massachusetts Heavy Artillery for one year at West Stockbridge, Massachusetts on 19 Aug 1864. Mustered in as a Private in Company B at Boston Harbor, Massachusetts on 25 Aug 1864. Mustered out at Washington, DC on 17Jun 1865. A charter member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma. Pierce County, Washington Territory. Died at Lakeview, Pierce County, Washington.
