Born in Derbyshire, England. A resident of Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa when he enlisted in the 21st Iowa Infantry. Mustered in as a Private in Company C the same day he enlisted. Transferred to Company D, 15th Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps on 5 Feb 1865. Mustered out at Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois. Joined Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington by transfer on 20 Nov 1909. Died in Tacoma, Washington. He is buried in a G.A.R. section of the cemetery.
