Andrew Jackson Hill was born in Illinois on 20 September 1841, son of John Hill (1795–1854) and Hannah Boggess (1797–1843). He served in the Union Army during the Civil War as a private in Companies L and F, 10th Illinois Cavalry — "Lincoln's Own" — which mustered in at Camp Butler in November 1861 and campaigned through Missouri and Arkansas.

 

In 1864 he married Margaret Cox (1842–1921) in Pike County, Illinois. The family moved west by way of Nebraska and Kansas, reaching Washington Territory before 1884.

 

Hill homesteaded in the Carbon River coal country. He surveyed the townsite in 1888 and first called it Hope. On 31 March 1891, with the population grown to 450, he filed the official plat of Wilkeson in the County Auditor's office in Tacoma. The Tacoma Daily Ledger later called him "a pioneer in that section and the man who laid out Wilkeson."

 

Daughter Harriet was born in Illinois, sons William and John and daughter Margaret were born in Nebraska, and daughter Blossom was born in Wilkeson, WA.

He died at Wilkeson on 5 December 1905, aged 64, and rests beside Margaret beneath the Hill obelisk in the town he founded.

• Pension index (NARA T288): invalid claim filed by the soldier 30 Jun 1880, application no. 402,379, certificate no. 258,069 (allowed). Widow Margaret Hill's claim filed 19 May 1906 from Washington, application no. 849,288, certificate no. 634,735.
• Married Margaret (Margeret) Cox in 1864, Pike Co., Ill.; she (1842–1921) shares the obelisk. Sons William M. (1870–1935) and John A. (1872–1892) are buried alongside. Hill surveyed and platted the town of Wilkeson.
